Water Safety New Zealand Appoints New Chief Executive

Water Safety New Zealand today announced the appointment of Jonty Mills – a specialist strategic communications executive and former member of BP’s senior leadership team – as its new chief executive.

Based in Wellington, Mr Mills has spent more than 20 years in communications and external affairs leadership, operations and business development roles and brings expertise in stakeholder management to CEO and ministerial level, with a blend of private and public sector experience.

A long-standing member of BP's Senior Leadership team and media spokesman before joining Opus International in December, Mr Mills has a background of leadership roles in marketing, operations and business development across commercial and retail business channels.

During his time at BP, he was responsible for managing the company’s community partnerships – including Surf Life Saving New Zealand, Young Enterprise Trust and Royal Society of New Zealand – and has experience in advocacy as the interface between BP and central and local Government. He also helped embed safety as the number one priority and value across the organisation and is a strong advocate for Water Safety New Zealand’s core values and strategic direction.

“We are very pleased to have secured someone of Jonty’s calibre to the Water Safety New Zealand Chief Executive role,” says Water Safety New Zealand Board Chairman Danny Tuato’o.

“Jonty brings with him the skills and expertise necessary to lead our organisation and sector partners through the next five years as we work to meet the goals of our Water Safety Sector Strategy 2020 and reach our targets of halving the preventable male drownings toll and bringing the number of preschoolers drowning in our waters down to zero.”

Mr Mills will take up his new role on Monday 1 August.
