Water Safety New Zealand has teamed up with Bunnings Warehouse in Porirua to help Ngati Toa, a local decile two primary school, keep its school pool open.
Around eight Bunnings team members will spend two days this week giving the 14m X 5m school pool a much-needed makeover and rebuilding the fence. Bunnings will provide the labour and materials to repair and repaint the pool as well as construct a new safer fence. A teacher and students will add the finishing touches with a specially designed mural.
Water Safety New Zealand CEO Matt Claridge says school pools in this country are increasingly at risk, with Wellington the hardest hit region when it comes to pool closures.
“School pools have been closing at an alarming rate for the past two decades with many schools struggling to cover the costs of maintenance and upkeep.”
Mr Claridge says Bunnings support of Ngati Toa is a great example of how local businesses can make a huge difference to a school pool’s future.
Bunnings spokesperson Alana Matangi, says Bunnings is a big believer in supporting the community.
“What better way to benefit a school and its community than to ensure it retains the valuable resource that is the school pool.”
“We’re excited to have the team here helping Ngati Toa ensure its pool is ready for another summer of learning valuable swim and survival skills.”
Ngati Toa School principal Kaye Brunton says the support getting the pool up and running for the summer season is a huge boost.
“The Board and staff believe the pool is hugely important but maintenance and general upkeep costs are always a huge struggle. We’re incredibly grateful to have the team from Bunnings Porirua here today and the children are very excited about getting back in the water.”
