Schools

New Zealand schools have traditionally been recognised as the primary vehicle for our children learning to swim. Today the situation has changed with many schools, for numerous reasons, no longer being able to meet the needs of their students in this area of learning.

The difficulties faced by most schools in regard to delivering quality learn to swim lessons are vast. Primarily they have a common theme of insufficient funding but there are also issues around access to facilities, teacher training and already full curriculum’s.

While it is not within WSNZ capabilities to fund learn to swim programmes we are committed to ensuring that the school system remains an integral delivery channel for learn to swim.

Our focus with regards to schools will be:

  • To continue to advocate at all levels for the inclusion of quality learn to swim programmes as a key component of a school’s curriculum and for the required resourcing to be made available that will facilitate the ongoing delivery of these programmes
  • Foster strong relationships between schools and local aquatic facilities and swim schools
  • Recognise schools and individuals who are achieving quality learn to swim outcomes.
